The Cross-Enterprise Document Sharing (XDS) profile facilitates the registration, distribution and access of patient electronic health records across health enterprises. XDS is focused on providing a standards-based specification for managing the sharing of documents between any healthcare enterprise, ranging from a private physician office to a clinic to an acute care in-patient facility.

The Patient Identifier Cross-referencing (PIX) profile facilitates the creation and maintenance of an enterprise or cross-enterprise master patient index by allowing patient identifiers to be mapped between independent identification domains, such as hospitals, clinics, payers, and regional consortia. The Patient Demographics Query (PDQ) profile provides standard queries that allow users to retrieve of patient demographic and visit information based on partial or full patient identification and/or location information.
