IHE and HIMSS Take Interoperability Showcase to European and Asian Conferences

Sharing the vision of connected healthcare systems.

CHICAGO (November 10, 2008) – The transformation of healthcare by information technology is a vision shared worldwide. The time has come to make this vision a reality by harnessing the potential of healthcare IT to drive improvements in the quality, safety and efficiency of care. IHE and HIMSS have taken the lead in sharing this message through a series of Interoperability Showcase demonstrations bringing the state of the art in interoperable healthcare IT to audiences of professionals at conferences in Europe and Asia. These events build on the successful showcases HIMSS has organized at its annual conferences for several years.

The most recent Interoperability Showcase took place at the World of Health IT, November 4-6 in Copenhagen, Denmark. This was the second consecutive year that HIMSS has hosted a showcase at this European event. The showcase, co-sponsored by HIMSS and IHE-Europe, featured cutting-edge standards-based technology for interoperability and information sharing. Attendees experienced an interactive environment where health IT systems addressed critical real-world clinical needs. Twelve healthcare IT companies participated, representing six IHE domains and demonstrating ten IHE profiles. More than 200 attendees took part in the demonstration. They were able to create their own electronic health record and build it and access it across multiple simulated healthcare settings. The clinical scenarios were entirely supported by the standards-based IHE framework.

The next event takes place February 24-27, 2009 at HIMSS AsiaPac09 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. For this event, HIMSS will partner with IHE Asia to hold an Interoperability Showcase featuring a clinical scenario demonstration of interoperability leveraging the IHE Technical Frameworks. Positioned as a unique event providing needs-based solutions, HIMSS AsiaPac09 seeks to promote the optimal use of healthcare IT and management systems. The demonstration will show the benefits that can be achieved with interoperable healthcare systems. HIMSS aims to help health IT stakeholders worldwide to connect and exchange ideas in order to help advance quality healthcare delivery through the use of IT.
