IHE Laboratory

IHE Laboratory addresses information sharing and workflow related to in vitro diagnostic testing in clinical laboratories as well as on the point of care.

IHE Laboratory is sponsored by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and  JAHIS. Together, we are responsible for development and publication of the IHE Laboratory Technical Framework.

IHE Laboratory Profiles

• [LTW] - Laboratory Testing Workflow integrates ordering and performance of in-vitro diagnostic tests by a clinical laboratory inside a healthcare institution.
• [XD-LAB] - Sharing Laboratory Reports describes the content (human and machine readable) of an electronic clinical laboratory report.
• [LDA] - Laboratory Device Automation integrates an Automation Manager and robotic laboratory equipment (pre-analytical devices, analyzers, post-analytical devices) in a clinical lab.
• [LBL] - Laboratory Barcode Labeling integrates robotic specimen container labeling systems with sources of order-related labelling information.
• [LPOCT] - Laboratory Point Of Care Testing integrates performing and collecting the results of in-vitro testing at the point of care or patient’s bedside.
• [LCSD] - Laboratory Code Sets Distribution distributes managed sets of clinical laboratory codes (battery, test and observation codes).

Committees

The Laboratory Planning and Technical Committee develop and maintain the IHE Laboratory Technical Framework.

Detailed committee responsibilities include:

  • Determining scope of development priorities
  • Communication and coordination of development activities with other IHE domains

• • Assessing the feasibility and scope of development priorities
  • Developing detailed documentation of approved Integration Profile proposals
  • Developing and maintaining the IHE Technical Framework

These committees are composed of representatives of stakeholder organizations who are users or developers of healthcare IT systems and related infrastructure. The committees are international in scope. All qualified stakeholders are invited to join.

Participation is open and voluntary, but in order to remain a voting committee member, participants must take part regularly in committee meetings and teleconferences and perform committee assignments. All IHE committee participants serve as representatives of IHE Member Organizations. Information on becoming an IHE Member Organization is available on the IHE Governance page.

The Laboratory committee maintains working documents on dedicated pages on the IHE Laboratory Wiki. There you can find committee rosters, schedules of committee activities and works in progress.
