IHE Eye Care

The IHE Eye Care domain was formed in 2005 and is sponsored by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). The mission of the IHE Eye Care domain is to bring together information technology stakeholders and healthcare professionals to implement standards for communicating patient information efficiently throughout healthcare facilities, large and small.

Roadmap

The Eye Care Planning and Technical Committees work in annual cycles to expand and refine the scope of interoperability issues addressed by the domain. Each year it selects a particular focus for activities in that development cycle.

2006 - IHE Eye Care Year 1 - Focus is to initiate IHE Eye Care, building upon basic profiles of workflow, charge posting and evidence reports and begin introducing this to the vendor and user community.

2007 - IHE Eye Care Year 2 - Focus is on building upon the beginning efforts and expand participation of vendors, particularly acquisition modalities. One new profile was added, Eye Care Displayable Reports, to enhance the usability to users.

2008 - IHE Eye Care Year 3 - Focus is on expanding participation of vendors, particularly electronic health record systems, to build critical mass in IHE Eye Care and building up physician/user understanding of the needs for IHE/interoperability

2009 - IHE Eye Care Year 4 - Focus is on expanding participation of vendors and building upon the awareness/education of the physicians and by expanding usage of IHE Eye Care by extending the Framework to include a new actor, Legacy Acquisition Modality Importer, which allows physicians to use their existing devices, instead of having to purchase new devices.

2010 - IHE Eye Care Year 5 - Focus is on continuing to expand participation of vendors, both acquisition modality vendors, legacy acquisition modalities, and electronic health record systems to reach a critical mass. Work in future years will be to build in more Information Technology Infrastructure profiles into the Technical Framework.

2011 - IHE Eye Care Year 6 - Focus is on continuing to expand participation of vendors to reach a critical mass by developing a new supplement, Basic Eye Care Workflow. Also, work in future years will build Eye Care specific CDA templates.

Current Activity

IHE Eye Care is currently working on the 2011 Basic Eye Care Workflow Profile. The Trial Implementation Version was published in Spring 2011 and is available on the Technical Frameworks page. Correction Proposals are accepted by the Technical Committee for consideration.

Committee Work

The Eye Care Planning and Technical Committees maintain information about their current work and future plans on the IHE Wiki.

Demonstrations and Presentations

The AAO sponsors public demonstrations of real world clinical scenarios in eye care showcasing the benefits of interoperability achieved using IHE Eye Care integration profiles. Information about these demonstrations, including the most recent at the AAO 2010 meeting in Chicago, is available here.
